Annie Dillard wrote that “How we spend our days is how we spend our lives.”

Our version: How we spend our minutes is how we spend our lives.

Next time you have 10 minutes before a flight, or you’re waiting to pick up the kids, or you’re waiting for the plumber to show up, ask yourself:

  • What’s a to-do item I could handle quickly, with a text or email from my phone?
  • What’s a to-do item I could quickly knock off on en route to my next destination?
  • What a to-do item that wouldn’t require a lot of thinking right now?
  • Or one where I could do just the next step right now, to keep things moving forward?

Focusing only on the small stuff won’t work for everything – but when you just have a few minutes, it’s a great way to give yourself the glow that comes from getting something off your to-do list.

Even better, it can free up space in your mind to focus on even more important things that deserve your full attention — like your health and wellbeing.

Once you start looking for minutes — instead of hours — you may be surprised at how comfortably small steps fit into your schedule.

That short walk you wanted to start taking — how about tomorrow, while you’re waiting for the kids to come out?
