Seven Ways To Reverse Negative Thinking
Think about your plan to add new, healthier habits to your life. Have any of these thoughts ever crossed your mind?
- “It didn’t work last time.”
- “This plan will never work.”
- “I just don’t see how I’ll ever reach my goal.”
If they have, negative thinking may stall your progress even before you start.
What’s the fix for negative thinking? Here are just a few of the techniques our expert coaches say achieve real results:
- Accept that a moderate level of negative thinking is natural. We’ve evolved to anticipate what could go wrong – it helps keep us safe, as long as we don’t let it take over.
- Test negative thoughts by taking a minute to consider whether the thought is true, important, and useful.
- When you have a negative thought, make it a point to follow it up with a positive thought about the same topic.
- Next time you have a negative thought, ask yourself what the first step towards overcoming that thought might be.
- Keep things in perspective. Ask yourself if the negative thought will still matter in two weeks. How about two months? Two years?
- Identify a specific source of negative thoughts in your life, and come up with a strategy to eliminate it.
- Practice a random act of kindness. Happiness is often contagious.
